Gynecological Exams

Unfortunately at this time we are unable to accept new patients for gynecological services. If you are and existing patient or if you need help with a referral, please call 312-707-8988.

Family Planning Associates Medical Group provides annual and problem focused gynecological exams that are tailored to your specific needs and concerns but often include:

  • Pap Smear Test
  • STI testing (genital warts/HPV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomonas)
  • Testing for common infections such as: yeast vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis) and urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Non-Obstetrical Ultrasound for evaluation of uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and IUD placement, if you are experiencing pelvic pain

A pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. First, the clinician or physician will insert a speculum into the vagina so that the clinician can see the cervix. Then they will take a sample of cells from the cervix with a brush.

If a pap smear result is abnormal, it does not mean that you have cervical cancer. It does mean that further testing (HPV testing and/or colposcopy) should be done to determine what abnormality is present, if any.

Human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes (HSV), gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomonas testing is performed with a cervical brush or swab, similar to a pap smear. These tests are sent to an outside lab and we normally will receive results back within a week. We can call you with the results, but we will not leave a message with the results unless you indicate that you would like us to do so.

We can also test for common vaginal infections, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), urinary tract infections, and yeast infections. In most cases we provide treatment the same day if needed, to help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms as soon as possible.

FPA does not currently provide screening tests for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis at this time. If you are interested in having this tests we are happy to provide a referral. See our ‘Helpful Links’ Page for more information on free and low cost testing sites.

We can provide prescriptions for birth control for those patients who have had a well-woman exam with us. We also provide contraception consultations without an exam, if you would like to get started on or continue a birth control method, but do not need or want to have an exam at this time.

If you have had an abortion with us and received a birth control prescription, you can make an appointment for a well-woman exam or contraception consultation and we can provide another prescription for you. We cannot extend your prescription without an office visit and evaluation.
